Conner Mantz’s arms were shaking as he warmed up for the Olympic marathon trials in Orlando in February. Mr. Mantz, 27, of Provo, Utah, looked over to his close friend, Clayton Young, who was stretching next to him. They had raced for the same prize money, fought for the same spots on the podium — and formed a bond so strong that other runners said they wished they could replicate it. Now, they hoped to get each other to the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris. They had a real shot: Mr. Mantz was a favorite to qualify, and Mr. Young was a strong contender.

Then, against all odds and all coaching philosophies, she is likely to do so again, and again, and again. And she needs mental resilience to maintain that level of play without losing confidence or focus when things aren’t going smoothly. Many of those skills are built in the gym with Lindsay Alexander, the associate strength and conditioning coach for Iowa’s women’s basketball team. Players do squats and deadlifts, and use a bench press to improve their upper-body and core strength. Ms. Alexander focuses particularly on strengthening players’ legs, which are especially important for shooting.

How to Talk to Children About Cancer

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer and has started preventative chemotherapy, she announced in a video message on Friday. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family,” Catherine said in the video. She said that it has taken time to recover from surgery to start treatment for her cancer. Children, especially younger children, consider their parents a steady rock, she said. If something disrupts that stability — “even if it’s a manageable cancer — to a child’s ears, wow, that is scary.”

The Bibas family said in a statement that they hoped the claims would be “refuted by military officials,” and thanked the Israeli public for its support. The three — Shiri Bibas, 32; Ariel Bibas, 4; and Kfir Bibas, 10 months old — were among the roughly 240 people taken hostage by Hamas and other groups on Oct. 7. On Wednesday morning, Yifat Zailer, Ms. Bibas’s cousin, described waiting for the lists of hostages set to be freed as “this horrible mathematical equation.”“Our hearts skip a beat every time,” Ms. Zailer said. “It’s really hard to breathe.”When the cease-fire was extended on Monday, Ms. Zailer found herself losing a sense of time. On Monday, Admiral Hagari said the Bibas family was being held not by Hamas, but by other armed groups in Gaza.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said the released hostages included a 12-year-old boy and multiple members of four other families. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli government, which had offered to extend the pause by one day for every additional 10 hostages released. Under the initial deal, Hamas agreed to release 50 women and children taken hostage during the Oct. 7 attack. In return, Israel agreed to free 150 women and minors held in Israeli jails, among other terms. Before Monday, Hamas had released 39 Israeli hostages under the deal, while Israel had freed 117 Palestinian prisoners.

Twelve hostages, including 10 Israelis and two Thai nationals, were released from Gaza and delivered into Israeli territory, the Israeli military said on Tuesday, on the fifth day of the cease-fire between Hamas and Israel. The hostages released on Tuesday included three members of one family, according to a list released by the Israeli prime minister’s office: Gabriela Leimberg, 59, Mia Leimberg, 17, and Clara Marman, 63. Before the latest transfer, Hamas had released 50 Israeli hostages and Israel had freed 150 Palestinian prisoners. The deal came after an Israeli offer to continue the cease-fire by one day for every additional 10 hostages released, who would be exchanged for 30 Palestinians in Israeli prisons. Hamas said it had received a list of three women and 30 minors that Israel would release in return on Monday. Dozens of Israeli soldiers as well as civilian Israeli men in their 70s and 80s are still being held captive in Gaza. The official said Hamas has said that in those cases, the mothers are being held by different groups, and it would take time to get them. Late Monday, Israel’s Army Radio, citing the prime minister’s office, reported that the government had received a list of hostages held by Hamas who are expected to be released on Tuesday.

The young men told relatives that they were talking in a mixture of English and Arabic before the gunman shot them, according to a family spokeswoman. Relatives said they feared that the young men were targeted for being Arab Americans. The suspect answered the door, “stepped toward them with his palms up,” Mr. Murad said, and told the agents, “I’ve been waiting for you.”When the agents asked him why, Mr. Eaton requested a lawyer. A public defender assigned as co-counsel for Mr. Eaton, Margaret Jansch, declined to comment on the details of the case. “These three young men are incredible,” he said, “and they are committed to building incredible lives.”Anna Betts contributed reporting from New York, and Siobhan Neela-Stock from Salisbury, Vt. He was shivering and had thrown away his hat midrace: “I just got mad at it, ‘Nothing matters. About 50,000 runners are expected to stream across the finish line of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, many of whom have been adhering to strict diets and navigating suboptimal gastrointestinal issues. For most of her life, Molly Huddle had a fairly simple routine before the start of a race. Huddle, an elite runner, would pack a bag, eat a pre-race meal, do some drills and get to the start line. She knew what she was doing: Huddle is a two-time Olympian and former American record-holder in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and half marathon. “I never thought I’d think about breastfeeding as much as I do now,” said Huddle, who finished third in her New York City Marathon debut in 2016. For the second year in a row, new mothers — two top American elite marathoners among them — will be starting the New York City Marathon with something new speckled along the course: lactation stations.

The New York City Marathon is not where world records are set. Runners there can easily be dropped off by a cab shortly before the starting gun, yawn and get going. This is a marathon for 50,000 people who go on a public transportation odyssey to reach a brutally challenging course that crosses five bridges and five boroughs. It’s a race for runners who want to prove this city deserves to be called the greatest on the planet, home of the greatest marathon in the world. It’s a reason to cheer on a random person doing a random thing on a random day for God knows what reason, but hey — go you.

U.S. intelligence agencies released no new imagery or other new evidence to make their case. A spokesman for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said The Times and intelligence agencies had different interpretations of the video. On Tuesday, U.S. intelligence officials reaffirmed their assessment that Israel was not responsible for the explosion. The evaluation reflected a higher degree of certainty by U.S. intelligence officials that Israel was not responsible for the blast. If the United States gets additional information that would point in a different direction, the official said, intelligence agencies will release it.

Shortly after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, friends and relatives of Gali Shlezinger Idan, who lived in a kibbutz near the Gaza border, received frantic messages to check her Facebook page. Hamas members were using Ms. Idan’s Facebook account to livestream themselves holding her and her family hostage. During the 43-minute broadcast, gunmen forced Ms. Idan and her family to crouch on a tile floor as missiles and gunfire blasted their building. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said Keren de Via, a friend of the Idan family who watched Ms. Idan’s children hug their parents and cry during the livestream. How could I watch this on Facebook?”In a new war tactic, Hamas has seized the social media accounts of kidnapped Israelis and used them to broadcast violent messages and wage psychological warfare, according to interviews with 13 Israeli families and their friends, as well as social media experts who have studied extremist groups.

Thirty minutes before the gates to Arthur Ashe Stadium opened at 4 p.m. on June 22, a cluster of people began gently rolling tennis balls across a parking lot. One after the other, they lowered one knee close to the ground, extended their opposite arm, and released a tennis ball to someone 10 feet away. Closer to a locked chain-link fence, a gaggle of people started doing calisthenics as others nervously shifted their weight back and forth, tightly clutching their paper applications.

The next month, she won the 100 meters at a Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar, defeating Jackson of Jamaica, an Olympic and world championship podium mainstay. She defeated Jackson again in July at a Diamond League meet in Poland. The national championships in Eugene, Ore., where she could qualify for her first world championships after failing to do so in 2022, was finally on the horizon. She had run 10.72 — what was then the sixth-fastest women’s 100 meters in history — a few months prior, and stepped into stardom when she won the 100 meters at the national championships with a dominant performance, finishing in 10.86.

A transgender pride flag appeared in the stands of Hayward Stadium in Eugene, Ore., just as the middle distance runner Nikki Hiltz stepped onto the track. The pink, blue and white flag was held overhead, then waved as Hiltz, who identifies as transgender and nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, made their way to the far side of the track for the 1,500-meter final of the U.S. National Championships in July. “It was a statement,” Hiltz said. “It reminded me that this is bigger than just me.”After 4 minutes 3.10 seconds, Hiltz broke the tape with an explosive final kick to overpower a stacked field that included Athing Mu, the 800 gold medalist at the Tokyo Games; Cory McGee and Heather MacLean, Olympic 1,500 runners; and Sinclaire Johnson, the 2022 national champion in the event. Track Star Tori Bowie Died in Childbirth

Track and Field Career: She was the world’s fastest woman. Bowie’s ascension to the fastest woman in the world began on a basketball court in Sandhill, Miss. Pisgah High School was too small to field separate basketball and track teams, so if Bowie wanted to play basketball, she would have to run track, too. She went on to help her track team win state titles, competing in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100-meter relay and long jump. “It was one of the best conversations we’ve had in a long time,” Holland said over the phone on Monday.

— Before she became a three-time Olympic medalist and before she earned the title of world’s fastest woman, Frentorish Bowie welcomed a camera crew to her hometown, Sandhill, Miss. “This is where I found my strength,” Bowie, who was nicknamed Tori, said of the small town 30 minutes northeast of Jackson. It was 2016, and at age 26 Bowie was about to make her Olympic debut as part of the U.S. sprinting team at the Rio de Janeiro Games. But first she stopped at Pisgah High School to visit teachers and staff and found herself wiping away happy tears. “One day I hope that I can come to Sandhill and there’s this huge sign that says, ‘Welcome to Sandhill, home of Tori Bowie,’” she said.
